  • Two quit attempts per year
  • A minimum of four in-person counseling sessions (individual or group) per quit attempt
  • Nicotine Replacement Therapy* (NRT): Gum, Patch, Lozenge, Inhaler, and Nasal Spray.
  • Medications*: Varenicline and Bupropion SR

Medicaid-Covered Counseling Options and How to Bill Medicaid

Medicaid covers the following types of providers for counseling services:

  • Psychologists
  • Licensed Clinical Social Workers in Behavioral Health
  • APRNs
  • Marriage and Family Therapists
  • Licensed Mental health counselors in Behavioral Health
  • Bill according to HCPCS code for 3-10 minutes or 10 minutes and longer**

** Patients may be billed directly for services exceeding established limits for counseling
